When you walk into Kruez Barbecue Market in Lockhart, TX the sent of smoldering post oak wood permeates your clothing like a burnt out campfire. It’s unavoidable, for the simple reason that the dining room is housed in the same space where countless pounds of beef ribs, house-made jalapeno sausage and brisket are smoked throughout the day. It’s the type of place that feels like the epicenter of inspiration for every big city barbecue joint, like finding the original hamburger stand. After a big plate of drool worthy beef washed down with a big red soda it’s hard not to give credit where it’s due to an establishment that has been at it since 1900.
