From Manhattan, if you take a 1 hour 12 minute New Jersey Transit Bus to Patterson and walk in the rain for 27 minutes you get to Rutt’s Hut. With a car, it’s 19 minutes. I don’t know many hot dogs worth a 2 hour journey but this joint has been deep frying links and churning out chili since 1928 and I wanted to know how. Their signature “The Ripper” is given the name because the hot dog casing splits in the deep fryer, then you toss on some homemade neon yellow relish, grab a birch beer and quickly realize the commute is worth every artery clogging bite.
