For as long as I can remember, my Dad has left for work at 7am and come home at 6pm sharp. He steps through the door, plunks down in his chair by the fireplace and has a Crown Royal on the rocks, just one, before helping with dinner or going into his workshop. It’s his ritual, it’s unbreakable, like some Cal Ripken Jr. ironman streak of dependability.
The older I get, the more I understand, the importance of carving out a buffer time between work and home life, to decompress. It could be a 10 minute jog or a cup of tea, but a good cocktail isn’t bad at all.
One of my favorite trends this year is the groundswell of talented bartenders making amazing cocktail mixers so we can all enjoy a better drink at home with minimal effort. Kirk Gibson and his team at Proof in Decatur, GA are doing just that. Which is fine with me, because I’m not trying to be a mixologist or hand-cut ice, I just want that little break to be even more enjoyable.
