The Case For Waking Up Early

Last Fall, on a whim, I woke up at 4:35am and jumped a 4 hour bus from Barcelona to Andorra, a blip of a country (the 16th smallest in the world) between Spain and France.

Now, the bus only goes to one place, the capital of Andorra La Vella which has 22,000 people so you can walk it in about an hour, but I came to go to a restaurant that is known for wild game.

When a rocked up enthusiastically to the front door, it was closed. Luckily, the chef was there (I think he felt bad for the loser who took a 4 hour bus without checking the hours) and he took me down the street to his favorite bakery. 5 minutes later a gray haired Catalan man handed be the best baguette of my life, flaky and warm, it disintegrated in my mouth like a Krispy Kreme donut fresh off the conveyer belt.

I hitched a ride to a couple mountain villages nearby, snapped this photo at the capital building, jumped back on the bus and was in Barcelona for dinner.

I’ve never made a better case to myself for waking up early. Sure, you can get some exercise in or a couple hours of productive work, but every so often you do something like visit a different country and have great bread and it really makes sense.
